Divide And Dissolve: “Want”

The dizzying, orchestral spin of “Want”, the latest single/video to emerge from Divide And Dissolve’s upcoming LP, Systemic, is a little over two minutes of loosely entwined tone and melody. The video of course backs up the visual turn you can hear in the music, but the instrumental’s lack of anchor sort of sets the music adrift, each composed cylinder of looping sound only somewhat married to its counterparts. The potential for separation of these sounds is only stifled by the music’s conclusion. There’s tension and anxiety, aurally relayed by an otherwise sublime corrosive swing and sporadic choral blasts.

Quote provided by Rarely Unable:

‘Want’ is a deep dive into longing within a decolonial framework. We can want many things, but how will it happen? What is necessary, what systems must be broken in order for people to live?”
— Divide And Dissolve saxophonist / guitarist, Takiaya Reed

Systemic is out 6/30/23 via Invada Records. Pre-order link is here.
