Single Premiere — “Isochronism” by Forty Feet Tall

Cover art by Tim Green

Portland’s own Forty Feet Tall, the combined work of Cole Gann (vocals/guitar), Jack Sehres (guitar), Brett Marquette (bass), and Ian Kelley (drums), have issued a new single called “Isochronism” with an accompanying video. The lead single for a planned LP, “Isochronism” seems inspired by a steady diet of Osees and dramamine, the garage-leaning haze and tension of the track set to a perpetual upswing, its rhythm bobbing back-and-forth through the band’s wind-up and launch into distorted, colorful guitar-laden murk.

As the term isochronism itself relates to the length of time it takes for a pendulum to swing, the motion of the track lends itself to its title. With the paranoiac odyssey at play in the video, the psychedelic stress and measured seesaw of this song is given visual weight as a gang of suited individuals with cueball’d noggins and scribbled on faces (a nod to the eccentric music-making character and film namesake Frank) haunt and harass the members of the band over the course of a day. Directed by Marquette, the video employs some slapstick, exaggerated jogs, and physical improv, exhibiting a fun bit of theater.
